Hello guys,

Happy Saturday.

I hope you are all hiding from the relentless heat here in the UK right now.

Here is a short post of 3 seal stamps I fell in love with as soon as I saw them. I know there are more stamps to the collection, so my next mission is to get the rest.

This little lady and her nearby sleeping pup are Antarctic Seals or scientifically known as a Leptonychetes Weddelli.

It was designed by Lindy Fisher and first released in 1992.

These seals have an amazing ability to dive deep into the ocean whilst holding their beath for over an hour.

This little guy is called a Ross Seal or scientifically know as a Ommatophoca Rossi and is also an Antarctic Seal. This was also designed by Lindy Fisher in 1992.

These seals have a knack for being the hardest type of seal to detect and also the smallest.

This mama and her cute little pup are called Hooker's Sea Lions or scientifically know as Phocarctos Hookeri. This stamp was also designed in 1992 by Lindy Fisher.

Native only to New Zealand, these guys are on the endangered list and are very rarely spotted by humans.

These seal stamps being native to New Zealand were issued for an area called the Ross Dependency. Left is the flag that represents the islands.

It was founded by James Clark Ross (hence the name) in 1841. There are no more than 2000 people on the island at any one time, the population is made up of scientists and researchers dotted about in various stations.

The image on the right indicates how the various areas of the cold South Pole continent is divided up. It is claimed by: New Zealand, USA, UK, France and Norway.

The following facilities situated on the island are:

  • Scott's Base represents New Zealand (this is the military base)

  • McMurdo Station represents the USA

  • Zucchelli Station represents Italy

  • Jung Bogo Station represents South Korea

  • China set up a new station in 2024.

Ok guys, I hope you enjoyed and happy rest of the weekend to you all.

I will be back later next week.

Stamping out,

Lisa
